  1. Dear Ms. Roanhorse:

I teach a science fiction class (at the high school level) and I would love to use your short story “Welcome to Your Authentic Indian Experience TM” as part of my curriculum next year.

May I have your permission to use it?

Also, since it is your intellectual property, I’d like to pay you for its use, whatever you feel is reasonable (I can mail you a check; I don’t do Paypal because of its founder Peter Thiel’s cozy relationship to Drumpf).

    Please let me know.

Also, if you give me your permission to use your story in my class, if you’d be interested in seeing the discussion questions that I intend to generate about the story to lead a class discussion, I’d be happy to email those to you.

    Thank you.

    –Brandon Juhl

      1. Hi Rebecca,

I am reading Trail of Lightnight right now and I love it!

I can’t wait to read more of your work

        -Becca

  2. Dear Ms. Roanhorse –
I consumed Trail of Lightning. When I finally returned to my senses, I recommended it by email, tweet, text, and conversation to everyone I encountered for the past month. I’ve read the “Authentic Experience ” and also preordered Storm of Locusts. Unfortunately, I found I can’t yet preorder Between Earth and Sky.

As I’ve told Darynda Jones, if you keep writing, I’ll keep reading. You’re an amazing creator. Thank you so much for sharing your gifts with us.
    -Pat

  3. Trail of Lightning was a real treat, and I certainly enjoyed your writing. I’ve been reading science fiction and fantasy for the best part of seventy years, and I’ve rarely come across a story I’ve enjoyed as much as yours. Thank you!

      1. I just finished Storm of Locusts: congratulations on another excellent book! It was great fun to find out more about your world and its characters, and I have to say the pacing was particularly well done, and kept me up reading late at night. And should we ever meet, we’ll have to talk about slide-action, double-barrel shotguns: esoteric weapons indeed, although admitted a “guy thing”.

  4. Dear Ms. Roanhorse:

Thank you for this wonderful book. You, Saladin Ahmed, Nnedi Okorafor, Ken Liu and Tomi Adeyemi are making it a very good time to be a fantasy reader. I can’t wait for the next book!

  5. Terry Holland

    Dear Ms. Roanhorse,

Thank you for this truly brilliant book (Trail of Lightning). I spent the best part of my childhood on Dine land from 1956 – 1962 in Tuba City and Page. While I live now in Canada, on Vancouver Island, I love to visit the red rock country of Northern Arizona and Northern New Mexico. This wonderful book made me feel that magical land in my heart again. I can hardly wait to read your short stories and your next novel in April.

  6. Ms. Roanhorse, I am so excited to have found another heroine and well formed crew worth following! I will read whatever you write; count on it. Thank you for the ride.

  7. Ms. Roanhorse, I wish to say congratulations on your new series The Sixth World. Having recently found out that I have a native american ancestor, I am so proud of your accomplishment. Will be looking forward to the next installment of The Sixth World.

  8. Oh my gosh, I just finished listening to Trail of Lightning and Storm of Locusts – back to back. What amazing books – I loved both! I’m hoping you will continue to add to this series! Thanks so much!

  9. Your writing is amazing, and I can’t wait for the next books in The Sixth World! I’ve been wondering how many there would be (I saw in another comment 2) and when they’d be out! I’ll definitely be buying your middle grade book for my students to read.

  10. Listened to you last night in Vail. Great personal story! Bought Trail of Lightning at the end of the talk. Just finished!! What a great read. Thanks for letting me get lost in your world. Cheers. Hod

  11. I’ve just listened to the Resistance Reborn audiobook. Thank you. It’s clear that you know and love the canon, and you made me weep on several occasions, mostly over Ransolm and Wedge, and of course, over Leia. I’d not heard of you before this novel, but I’ll be checking out your other work now. May the Force be with you.

  12. Just finished Resistance Reborn and it’s honestly one of the better Star Wars novels that exists.”My father is Darth Vader, does anyone question my loyalty to the resistance?”…. Goosebumps
For a group of characters that overall doesn’t rank high in the pantheon of Star Wars lore to me(with exceptions) you wrote a very enjoyable and interesting book.Looking for another installment from you in the Galaxy far,far away
    Keep up the good work
    -Dustin

  13. I am so glad to hear you are continuing after Trail of Lightning and Storm of Locusts! I used to live in New Mexico and greatly enjoyed reading them. The two books are unique and so is your style, plus what a great heroine! This series grabbed my attention from the start and the action just speeded along, never letting go. You don’t disappoint. Thank you!

  14. I’ve really enjoyed your 6th world books. I recently got to sit down and listen to some stories of Raven with a Tlingit Elder up here in Alaska. It reminded me so much of Coyote. I’m looking forward to reading more of your work.

  15. Just finished Storm of Locusts. I am so impressed, at so many levels, with the quality of your work. Setting, characters, narrative. The complete package. As a native New Mexican who has been away from the Land of Enchantment for decades, I’m teary with nostalgia at the same time as I’m exhilarated by Maggie’s story. Can’t wait to read the next one. I will be sending copies of your books around for Keshmish, for sure.

  17. Hi. Just read Resistance Reborn. I really enjoyed it. I hope you get the opportunity to write more Star Wars. I look forward to reading more of your work. Thanks

  18. I just read Trail of Lightning and Loved It! I’m very excited to read the next book, and hope the series continues beyond 4 books. Thank you!!!!!!!!!

  19. I want to thank you for writing a book about Native American mythology. Being a native New Mexican and having an avid interest in mythology it was extremely exciting for me to your book. Thanks again.

  20. I found out about Trail of Lightning two years ago and I loved everything about it and the sequel. I’m a huge fantasy and scifi fan but I have never read anything quite like it before! I’m highly anticipating book 3 in the series!
I work in a bookstore in Germany and I was thrilled to see Trail of Lightning has been translated to German last year. As soon as I saw it hit the shelves I wrote a recommendation, and I hope German readers love it as much as English ones do!
Thank you for this wonderful world and story!

  21. Rebecca, I just finished reading our store’s Advance Reader’s Copy of “Black Sun” and will be putting it on our front display with an essay as to its brilliance upon release. I would have loved the book for its clever writing, endearing characters, and engaging story set in any world but to see the indigenous peoples of Turtle Island, even if not my nation, portrayed in such a multifaceted manner brings the novel from great to revolutionary. As a non-binary, bisexual, Wendat (Huron), the representation felt amazing. I loved every aspect of the Meridian continent and can’t wait to force everyone I know to read “Black Sun”. You do a great service to the fantasy genre, your people, and all of us who have been portrayed as savages for far too long. Thank you, you beautiful wonderful human.

  22. Hello! I just finished Black Sun a few minutes ago and I just wanted to say it’s one of the best books I’ve read in a very long time. 🙂 I immediately went online to see if there was a release date for the next book and I’m so excited for it to come out, whenever that may be. Thank you so much for creating such a vibrant world that is not Eurocentric – it was truly so refreshing and intriguing. This year is especially hard, and this book has been helping me the past days I read it. Also, I’m definitely emotionally attached to the characters now. 😉

    – Sadie

  24. Rebecca,

I love, Love, LOVE your Sixth World books, so much so that I give them as gifts!

I look forward to the day that someone in the film industry realizes what rich material this is for a series of movies. I will keep my eye open for new installments of the series and for any films that result from your wonderfully written books!

Thank you so much for sharing your talent and your views with us!

  25. Hi Rebecca!
I’m reading A Universe of Wishes, and was hoping to find more Vi and Val…. Will there be more of them in the future?!

  26. Dear Ms. Roanhorse,

A friend recently lent me a copy of Black Sun and while I was hesitant at first (I’ve always erred more towards sci-fi than fantasy), I absolutely could not put it down. I fell in love with your amazing characters and am so impressed with your innate ability to be so inclusive and representative, it is truly refreshing and inspiring. I immediately read Trail of Lightning and Storm of Locusts back to back this weekend and I am so excited for more of both story lines!

Also, shout out to LaVar Burton (Reads), I listened to your short story, Welcome to your Authentic Indian Experience TM, a couple years ago. Another masterpiece!

    Thank you again,

    -K. Lucero

  27. Hi I just wanted to say thank you for reigniting my love of reading! I just finished the trail of lightning and I cannot wait to read the next one.

  28. I just finished reading Race to the Sun. It was such an amazing feeling to read a story based around all the creation stories I grew up hearing. It was feeling like no other to read a book with a heroine from you tribe and read the language of your tribe in a modern story. You have created a book that I hope many will read and re-read. I’m an Elementary/Middle school teacher and if I ever get the opportunity to read this to one of my future classes I will do so with pride. You made the creation stories come alive in a way that I believe will interest and intrigue young people of our tribe who otherwise might not see our ancient ways and stories as relevant. From the bottom of my heart, thank you so much for writing this story (I hope you write more starring Nizhoni and crew!) and bringing the Navajo culture to life in a way that will reach many readers and help erase mis-conceptions about our native people.

  29. Thank you for providing a unique & complex heroine that one could relate to, root for and cry with. I’ve longed for more diverse and inclusivive voices in post apocalyptic genre specifically and scifi and fantasy too. Thanks for sharing your gift of writing in such a meaningful way by weaving in important history and culture into your world building of a future. You undoubtedly touch many lives with your thought provoking works. Thank you. Erica

  30. Dear Rebecca Roanhorse:

Really enjoyed ‘Race to the Sun’! Thank you for sharing this novel! Ahéhee’.

Finished reading the story today and am inspired, plus uplifted, amid rough times. I sure do like Nizhóni and the other young heroes. As an older individual, I feel a personal connection with Bethany Begay.

Have put the novel amid other treasures in my den so that I’ll see it many times throughout each day. Even though we’ve not met, you are a hero to me, Rebecca.

    Respectful regards,
    Libby

    1. PS: That sentence of mine isn’t quite right! What I mean is your novel gives attention to each creature and character. And in writing and sharing it, and for all else that you’ve done to uplift life, you are hero.

  31. Traveling through the four corners region when I was very young, I was struck by the fact that this land was rich with legends, ancient stories and traditions that would make for a spectacular literary universe; a living, breathing, very real mythology that lived in the space just past the pavement of the road and past the barbed wire fences out in the grass, cactus and canyons. Northern Arizona has always been my home and my playground, but I always feel like an interloper. It has occurred to me many times that in longing for Middle Earth, Tatooine or Arrakis, there was a world just as rich all around me, and magnificent stories of spirits and gods screaming to be told, written in petroglyphs I could not read. As much as I longed to be able to tell these stories, I also knew that as a white kid, they weren’t my stories to tell. Imagine my surprise when I found Trail of Lightning; a story just as real and vivid as the ones I had hoped for. I can’t begin to express my gratitude for these stories you tell. You have really made these vivid native spirits come alive, and I am so excited that more of these stories are on their way. I am midway through Storm of Locusts now, and I hope it inspires more Native creators to let their own voices speak. I’m listening, and I hope the rest of the world is too. These voices must be heard. Thank you.

    1. Black Sun was outstanding and I was incredibly fortunate to get a signed copy during your promo. So excited to hear about Fevered Star and can’t wait to read it. Do you know if you will be signing copies and how one might obtain one. Looking forward to all of your future works as well. Thank you for broadening horizons.

      1. Thank you so much! I should have into about signed copies of FEVERED STAR in the near future. Signing up for my newsletter is the best way to stay up to date on promos.

  32. Dear Ms. Roanhorse,
Thanks for setting an book in northern Arizona, albeit a dystopian Arizona. As a graduate of Farmington High (go Scorpions!) and NAU, I am always delighted to find a book set in that locale. Plus, I love how you have worked the native spirits into the book.
    Keep em coming,
    Gary Hunt

  33. Nice of you to have a place to leave a comment. I just finished Black Sun and it was terrific. I’ve been reading pretty much every noteworthy new sci-fi book during COVID and this one stood out as a favorite. The storytelling was so effortless and somehow you built a unique world without laboring over minutia. Look forward to part 2!

  34. Dear Ms Roanhorse,

Where do I even start? I am literally pooping (not sure if I’m allowed to curse here 🤷🏽‍♀️) bricks hoping to any and all the gods and forces of the universe that you’ll there will be another book after storm of locusts.

Wow, again , what the hell do I even say other than thank you for writing these books. I’ve fallen in love with these characters, empathized with Maggie’s pain (even shed a tear or 2), and am absolutely positively ready to recommend your work to anyone and everyone.

I truly truly hope to see your work onscreen one day (even though everything I imagined to your writing is pretty cool as well). You’ve written the type of books that I never want to end. I feel sad starting one because I know it’s gonna end and it’s quite the crisis.

Thank you so much for sharing your creative gifts with the world. I’m happy found your books. They reigned the inner bookworm that I thought I lost to growing up.

If you see this as, humor me: who would you cast as Kai in an film adaptation of Trail of Lightning ?

Again, thank you , thank you THANK YOUUUU!!!!

  35. My grades eights will be reading your short story The Takeback Tango and I was wondering what insprired you to write this story? Why call the ship “My Heart Will Go On”?

  36. I just finished Black Sun. Absolutely one of the best books I have read this year. It will stay one of my favorites for years to come. Thank you for such an incredible immersive work! Also as a transperson, it was lovely to see xe/xir pronouns. I will be (not so) patiently waiting for the next book!

  37. Any idea when Black Sun #2 will be released? I just listened to the audiobook of book #1, and I LOVED every single word. (Sorry for any misspellings since I haven’t seen the written words.)

Your characters are so compelling! I cannot WAIT to find out what happens to Serapio! I totally thought he was going to die (and didn’t realize it would have a sequel) so when he is on Benunda and Oca tells him to “Hang on. We’re going home,” I literally gasped out loud!!!!! I was driving down the road with my mouth hanging open in shock and excitement!

I am dying to know what happens next!!!!!

  38. Hi Ms Roanhorse,

I discovered Black Sun recently, and I really loved this book! He’ll definitely add up to my favorites, so much so that I wanted to tell you! I loved just about everything about it! I adored your writing, I adored the complex mythology you built, I adored the plot (I cannot wait for the next adventure!), and I adored all the characters. They are complex and you made me love every one of them, even the “bad” ones. I want to be part of each one of the clans now, or a Knife…or a Teek…(also, I love crows and totally think they are underestimated).

Thank you so much for creating this great and precious escape to this world,

    Géraldine from France

  39. Like many others, I want to let you know how much I enjoyed Black Sun. It is probably my favourite of your works so far (with the possible exception of “Welcome to Your Authentic Indian Experience™” which was brilliant in a whole other way). Black Sun also endeared itself to me because of your casual use of xe and xir as pronouns. I use xe and xyr as pronouns and this is the first time reading a story where I saw myself in the pronouns, something I very much appreciated. I am also a spec fiction writer and I hope our paths will cross at a science fiction convention or the like in the future. Looking forward to book two!

  40. I feel like my heart has been waiting for a book like Black Sun all my life and I didn’t know it. I enjoy your other works very much as well. Black Sun has everything I could ask for with a refreshing lack of white colonization. I cannot wait for your second in the series. You are an inspiration and a remarkable storyteller. Thank you.

  41. Just finished Black Sun and loved it so much! Also wanted to tell you that I’ve really admired your work and see you as one of my inspirations. Beyond the stories themselves, I’m ecstatic that more and more Native writers seem to be getting very much deserved, however belated, recognition. I’m a new black writer, starting writing sci-fi with Black and Native characters and love that you’ve shown me that our stories can be told and valued!

  42. Hi Rebecca. I now finish reading your book Trail of lightning. It´s amazong book.

I really like Meggie, this strong women, confuse with her feelings.
I aprecciate this world, its darkness, its disturbing feeling.

I am look forward to another reading your books.

    Vojtěch Polák from czech republic.
